On Friday, May 3rd, NPHS biology classes went “fishing” for information in the S.E.A.S.  The S.E.A.S. stands for the Science Education At Sea program at Sandy Hook Bay, NJ, a program that provides many opportunities for biology students to learn about different types of underwater species.  Biology classes got to look at different underwater creatures and learn about the Sandy  Hook Bay area.

The day started with Mrs. Campbell and her biology students boarding a fishing ship and looking at different types of crabs, such as the horseshoe crab and the spider crab.  They also got to observe phytoplankton and zoo-plankton, obtained from the water in the Sandy Hook Bay, under a microscope.  The instructors on the ship also dropped a net into the water, and with a lucky catch, they caught many different species of fish and invertebrates that live in the ocean.

“I really liked the trip because I got to see and touch sea creatures, which is something I would have never experienced,” said Melissa Leung, a Freshman.

Instructors at the S.E.A.S taught biology students about the way the underwater creatures evolved into the way they are today.  They also taught them how to tell the difference between different species of fish and how the fish camouflage into their environment.

“It was a really great trip, and it was interesting to see the different marine life.  I liked it; it was a fun and educational experience,” said Kaitlyn Chan, a Freshman.

NPHS students also participated in a crabbing competition where each group of got a crab trap and threw it into the water.  The group that caught the most crabs in the trap won.  The Senior and Junior team caught two crabs, while the Freshman team only caught one.  Overall, the S.E.A.S. program taught biology students much about the underwater environment as well as the species that lived there while creating fun activities for the students.
