Pioneers Fall to Plainfield

The Plainfield boys’ soccer team shut out New Providence, 1-0, on Tuesday September 24 at Leider Field.

Backed by the solid effort in net by Plainfield goalkeeper Juan Barron, striker Miguel Hernandez scored the lone goal to give the Cardinals the shutout win.

Before Plainfield’s goal, the Cardinals had a couple of quality chances on net, mostly by Plainfield’s offensive-minded striker, Oliver Komger. A few saves from Pioneer goalkeeper Michael Zamora kept the game scoreless.

In the 17th minute, New Providence had their best opportunity of the game to get on the board. A designed free kick executed by the Pioneers could not be sent in the back of the net after the ball trickled through the 6-yard box without a player getting a cleat on it.

Hernandez responded for Plainfield in 22nd minute when his shot was deflected into the goal.

“We are lacking a little bit of composure at the moment,” said New Providence head coach Teddy Niedzielski. “We get a little bit nervous when we go in on net and that’s where we can’t capitalize on our opportunities.”

The script was similar in the second half for the Pioneers, being unable to capitalize on their chances on goal.

“We need to be more sustained on offense,” senior defender Jason Bradley said after the game. “We need to string some more passes together and get some more shots on goal.”

Despite a few last minute attacks on offense, the Pioneers were unable to find the net, which ultimately led to their fourth straight defeat.

“We are going to switch a few things around on offense,” Niedzielski said. “We are getting the chances, so they will eventually start falling.”

New Providence looks to reverse their recent misfortunes in Jersey City on Friday, September 27, when they take on McNair Academy.
