NPHS Fall Play is Harvey

Andrew Van Buskirk, staff writer

New Providence High School’s annual Fall play is only a few weeks away.  The production this year will be the classic Pulitzer Prize winning drama Harvey by American playwright Mary Chase.

Mr. Duke, NPHS Theater Production and Broadcast Journalism teacher,  is the play’s director, and he is looking forward to the show: “I’m very pleased with the cast, the cast is very pleased with the cast, we have a good mix of experience.”

There are a lot of talented NPHS students involved in the show as on stage as actors:  “Some upperclassmen have some stage experience under their belt and some new faces that are getting involved in one of our shows for the first time, and everybody I think is progressing well; they’re learning their lines and they’re developing the characters,”  Duke said.

Behind the scenes, he said:  “The crew is kind of an open forum for students who want to come and work on the crew, we work every week one or two days a week after school. As we get closer to the show we kind of speed up the work, you know, add to the production process a little bit, so that’s open to anybody who wants to come help out.”

Mr. Duke also has a lot of faith that, when the play is complete, many will enjoy it. “Harvey is kind of a classic comedy that probably most students are not familiar with, and probably their parents are or even their grandparents, but even though it’s an older play, it still has a lot to say about family, faith and community.”

Harvey will be shown on  Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 in the High School Auditorium.
