School in August? NPHS Students Weigh In

As most schools in the Northeastern area of the United States typically do, New Providence High School has a calendar that begins the school year in September and ends in June. But the 2023-2024 NPSD calendar is scheduled to have a start date of August 31st, which is likely to spark the trend of an August start date for many of the coming years.

This school year took an earlier start than usual, with the first day of school being September 1st, the Thursday before Labor Day. This was a shock to many due to the fact that in past years the district has usually begun on the Monday AFTER Labor Day.

Alexa DeSeta, a junior at NPHS stated that she did not like the September 1st start date:  “I like starting in September and ending in June, but I do wish there were more breaks or just longer breaks in general.”

Discussions about how this past summer felt shorter due to the earlier start date circulated the school early in the year.

In agreement with DeSeta, Ronan Flanagan who is also a junior, said “I like starting in September and ending in June because I’m used to it.  I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

While many more students are likely in favor of the September-June calendar as well, some students disagree and wish the calendar was formatted differently.

Luca Vitale, a junior, stated: “I really think it would be nicer to get out in May and start in August.  June is a good summer weather month and spending almost all of it at school is annoying.”

Kevin Vindas, a sophomore, agrees: “I would like it better if we got to have the full month of June for summer instead of the full month of August.”
