The 2023 season was one of the most challenging seasons for the NPHS varsity volleyball team, but they rose up to the challenge.
“A lot of people define success differently. Some people look at success as the amount of wins that they got this season. However, I feel that for this season, that wasn’t the case. Success was more defined on our ability to overcome some difficult humps throughout the season,” said Alessandra Finis, head coach of the varsity team.
Finis said this season was very different from her previous six years of coaching. With 11 seniors leaving in the previous season, the team had a whole new dynamic. Despite the challenge of having to construct a new team, the team played very well, even against difficult teams.
“Some of the highlights were watching the team play against more difficult teams such as Scotch Plains and Governor Livingston and really show them that they can keep up with that level of competition” Finis said.
In addition to playing many successful games, the varsity team was able to host multiple successful events such as Dig Pink and Gold Out, both of which brought in hundreds of dollars that could be donated to charity.
JV also had a a few highlights throughout the course of a tough season where they won 9 out of 20 games.
“One of the best games that we played was probably our last game against Dayton. They tend to be a little bit more of a rival school so it’s really nice to see the girls play well and see them beat Dayton” said Coach Berrios, the JV coach.
