Soccer season is now about halfway through, and both girls and boys soccer are off to an excellent start. As of right now, the girls are currently 7-0-2, and the boys are 5-1-2.
The girls definitely have some tough competition coming up, and hope to find success.
Girls head varsity coach Scott Murphy said: “So far I think we’ve done really well. I think we’re beating expectations.”
Looking back at their 6-12-1 record from last year, there is clearly improvement.
One of the senior captions, Sophia Salazar, said that so far this season is: “definitely a step up from last year,” and she strives to “have fun since it’s my last season.”
Coach Murphy also has set some goals for the rest of the season, which are: “try to win our conference, county, section, and state.”
The boys team also has high hopes for the rest of their season. Last year they had a 6-9-2 record, and they plan on improving that this season.
Head coach Craig Barclay said: “We’ve had a good start to the season so far, even though we have a tough schedule this year with some challenging games.”
They currently only have one loss, which was 2-0 to Cranford, but coach Barclay said: “I think that even in the game we lost we played well.”
Agreeing with coach Barclay, junior captain Elis Sanders said: “Right now, we only have one loss, and hopefully we keep the wins coming.”
Additionally, both Barclay and Sanders said that the team needs to improve on their composure in front of goal and finishing more often. They have had many chances in front of net that they could have scored off of.
Soon, both teams will start their tournaments, and they are hoping that with a positive outlook and determination they will meet or exceed expectations.
