With all Fall sports coming to an end the varsity girls soccer team held on the longest by making it all the way to their state sectionals game on Monday, November 6, 2023. The last time they made it that far was in 2021.
Head coach Murphy is extremely proud of how far his team has come and how much effort they put into trying to win the game, despite losing to Mountain Lakes 3 – 1.
“The team should not take the last game for the final result and look at the season as a whole and what we did winning 15 games, only losing three, was one of the best seasons that any team’s had in the last 12 to 15 years,” he said.
The girls prepared for this important game by doing shooting drills, having a light practice to save their energy, and discussingstrategy they would use, including how to cover certain players on the other team. They focused on plays they would make, including corners, free kicks, and more.
Murphy said, “Overall I thought we did really well. There’s the strategy we used in the first half, which we hadn’t used before. It really helped us control the game and then we had our chances at the end and just their goalie made two big saves.”
Freshman Izzy Silvestre said“I think that we had a lot of opportunities to score but we just couldn’t finish and get in the back of the net.”
At one point, the team was up by one goal hit in by Maddie Merrick, a junior assisted off a corner by Gillian Poiesz, a senior, in the first two minutes. Unfortunately, a number of key players were injured or got injured during the game, which played a role in the ultimate outcome.
