The New Providence Girls Varsity Lacrosse team, led by coach Jennifer Henry, and assistant coach Gavin Jakositz, have been rebuilding their team this season.
The girls lacrosse team played and won their first game of the season on April 1st against Morristown-Beard, with a final score of 10-9. Coach Henry said that she felt that the strengths in the first game were that there were assists on goals, draw controls, and ground balls. She said that the areas that they need to work on are making sure that defense knows where their girl and the ball is, and the plays and shooting.
Last season, the girls lacrosse team went 6-13, and 2-5 in the North Jersey Interscholastic Girls Lacrosse League. The team lost senior captains Cara Lawton and Rowen Henry, who had a big impact on the team, to graduation. Lawton, who had 63 goals last season and a total of 192 goals throughout her entire high school career, is now playing D1 lacrosse at Bryant University. Although Henry was typically a defender, she would often end up on attack as well, and had 16 goals last season.
The new captains for the 2025 season are seniors Megan McPoland and Milone Henry.
McPoland has a total of 43 goals, 14 assists, and 23 ground balls. McPoland is committed to Bates College, which is a D3 school.
McPoland said: “I think that we need to have really good communication skills, both on the offense and defense, so that we can work together, because a lot of the team is new to being varsity, so we don’t know each other that well.”
