Netflix Ads: Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down?
October 13, 2022
As we head into 2023, Netflix has decided to make a quick change.
To counteract their drop in subscribers, the streaming service is planning to launch an ad-supported subscription for a cheaper price. According to the Los Angeles Times, Netflix is planning to incorporate 4 minutes of ads per hour.
Here at NPHS, many students are infuriated by the change, and are not willing to watch ads, even if it lowers the cost. In contrast, many students love the idea and think it will be a great fit.
Matthew Barlow (Junior):
How do you feel about Netflix adding a cheaper ad-supported subscription?
“I watch YouTube a lot, so I’m pretty used to watching ads throughout my videos, so I don’t really mind the addition of ads to Netflix.”
Will you drop your current subscription for the cheaper one?
“Like I said before, ads don’t really bother me unless they’re super long. I don’t see why I wouldn’t change subscriptions. It seems pretty beneficial.
Bridgit Ryan (Junior):
How do you feel about Netflix adding a cheaper ad-supported subscription?
“I feel that Netflix is one of the only streaming services that we have that doesn’t have ads or commercials. I feel like including ads takes away the one thing that really sets it apart from other services.”
Will you drop your current subscription for the cheaper one?
“I don’t think I’d rather switch subscriptions. Although it is a bit pricey, I think it’s totally worth not having ads. They take away from your shows and always come up at the worst times.”
Maddie Merrick(Sophomore):
How do you feel about Netflix adding a cheaper ad-supported subscription?
“Honestly I don’t really care that much. Obviously I think it’s good that they are adding the new subscription, but it shouldn’t really create as much controversy as it does. It’s pretty simple, if you want to pay less, you can.”
Will you drop your current subscription for the cheaper one?
“Definitely not. I like my Netflix the way it is, and changes don’t need to be made.”
Regardless of their personal preferences, it seems like NPHS students have come to the consensus that with the addition of the ad-supported subscription, all parties will benefit from the ability to choose what they’d rather pay for.
