Sculpture is an essential class to take for students. Some people overlook the importance of sculpture, and just view it as a fun class or an easy A. Although it is a really fun class, it improves certain skills that a student needs to develop. Sculpture brings out the creativity in students, helps them develop problem-solving skills, and helps them relax and take a break from other stressful classes and the school environment.
Sculpture brings out the creativity in students. Just as in sculpture outside of the classroom, artists choose what they want to create based on their creativity. There are so many different ideas that they can come up with, and so many different ways to convey them. Not only is sculpture diverse in itself, it also captures the diversity of human expression. Experimenting with different ideas broadens the horizons of their creativity, giving them new ideas in sculpture and in life.
Mrs. Eriksen, the sculpture teacher at NPHS, notes that sculpture “develops critical thinking, problem solving, and most importantly, creativity.”
Students can create anything and bring their ideas to life. There are many different ways that artists can express their creativity in sculpture because of the different materials, techniques, and textures. This is beneficial to the learning environment because creativity helps develop their innovative and critical thinking skills that are needed later in life.
Sculpture helps students develop problem-solving expertise that they can use in situations later in life. Sculpture requires methods such as planning, trying new things, and learning to fix mistakes. When students create something and it doesn’t turn out the way they thought, they need to try and take the best approach to fixing their mistake.
Maddie Hill, a current sculpture student, says that “If your creation doesn’t work out the way you planned, it forces you to think of new ways to do things.”
Sculptors often think outside the box to make their designs the best they can be. Learners need to develop these skills for future projects and in everyday situations.
Even though sculpture can teach you a lot of skills, it is still a fun way to relax and unwind during a stressful day at school. Oftentimes, school is really hard and draining for students. Sculpture is seen as a nice distraction from the work and hardships that school brings. When sculpting, many find themselves at peace with their creativity and relax their minds. Tactical engagement with the materials can help release tension and improve focus, which is needed for a successful day at school. Most art is healing, but sculpture highlights the use of visualization, which is more helpful to some.
Sculpture helps reduce stress for students as well as teaches them valuable lessons in diverse ways that they wouldn’t be able to experience in any other class. Three dimensional art is truly a powerful tool. Everyone has a lot to learn from sculpture, which is why it is a necessary class.
