Many may know Miller Field as a baseball field, a soccer field, a place for kids to hang out, but many don’t know the actual person behind the field. Mr. Paul Miller was a former faculty member at New Providence High School. I had the great privilege and honor to speak with him and interview him about his long career at NPHS.  Here is what he had to say:

Emi Goswami: “I understand you coached basketball, baseball, golf, cross country, and JV soccer for quite some time, as well as racked up several titles for all teams. What did you like most about coaching?”

Mr. Paul Miller: “I enjoyed the students and enjoyed their accomplishments.  It was always fun for me.”

Goswami: “I noticed several former players you coached were drafted into Major League baseball teams.  Would you say you had a particular form of coaching different from others that made many kids so successful?”

Miller: “I’m not sure. I think we worked hard, and always tried to get better. I would make sure they were well prepared when they went into a game.”

Goswami: “Have you held any other leadership or management positions throughout the New Providence school system?”

Miller: “I was in the physical education department for several years, and was Athletic Director for a number of years.”

Goswami: “What do you miss most about New Providence High School or the town as a whole?”

Miller: “For me it was a great place to work. I worked under some wonderful people, including Edward Lieder, you know Lieder field. He was my immediate boss. We have some great administrators. I enjoyed working for them and just in general it was a really wonderful experience for me to be part of the New Providence athletic and school system.”

Goswami: “What do you like to do in your free time now?”

Miller: “I actually still play a lot of golf. I also enjoy reminiscing with a lot of my former students.”

Goswami: “Do you have any advice for high schoolers?”

Miller: “It’s really what you make it. New Providence is a great school system. If you want a great school system, New Providence is there for you to take advantage of while you are still a student there.”
