According to some studies, 78% of all Seniors get Senioritis by the beginning of April. The start of Senior year is full of stress: trying to finish college applications, keeping your grades up and GPA high, getting rejected from colleges, and finally having to pick a school you will spend 4 years at. Seniors really have to keep up and lock in for the first 8 months. Then when April finally hits is when schools most see their Seniors begin to get restless.
Luckily, NPHS provides fun experiences for Seniors so they can enjoy the end of their Senior year with the classmates they have been going to school with since they were young.
The first activity is the prom fashion show. This takes place at the end of March and everyone’s friends and family come support the Senior class as they strut on the big stage. This gives the Seniors the opportunity to show off their amazing prom dresses from their junior prom or dress that they had from previous years. They get partnered up with someone, then create a handshake to do as they pass each other. They also have to fill out a questionnaire about themselves which will then be shared with the crowd when they are the main model. There is a raffle that takes place before it starts where you put in tickets to win prizes.
Next, there is commitment day. This is a worldwide event that happens on May 1 that lets the Seniors celebrate where they will be going to college next year. The girls dress up in their jeans and shirts while the boys wear their college polos. They take the first and second period of the day to eat, take photos, and just have fun with each other. This is to send the Seniors onto the next chapter of their lives.
Then there is the Senior prom. For New Providence, juniors and Seniors have prom together so this is the second year the Seniors will go to prom. This annual event takes place on May 29 this year at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. Everyone dresses up, gets their hair and nails done, and their makeup for this. They can choose to come with a date or alone and it is a fun night of dancing, pictures, and eating with everyone. After, many students head down to Seaside where they have “prom weekend.”
Next, there is the Senior barbecue. This usually happens the last day of classes. Instead of going to afternoon classes, Seniors spend time outside doing activities like slip and sliding, spike ball, kona ice, and just enjoying time together in school one last time.
Finally the last things the Seniors get to do is walk the stage at graduation and go to Project Graduation. This year, graduation falls on June 17 where Seniors will receive their diplomas in front of their loved ones. This happens on Leider Field. After the ceremony and taking pictures, they come back to the school around 10 and get on the bus to a YMCA where they spend the whole night doing fun stuff before coming home around 5 AM. This is the last thing they will ever do together as a class and as members of New Providence High School.
So, even though the beginning of Senior year might be stressful, just remember to soak in every single moment because just like that 4 years will pass and you will find yourself sitting in a class with your best friends for the last time ever.
