NPHS Literary Magazine PoeTree at NPML

The Literary Magazine was proud to present the PoeTree Event at the New Providence Memorial Library on December 17, 2019. At the library, NPHS students taught children how to write poetry, which they hung on a Christmas tree donated by ACME.

“It was a wonderful success,” Samantha Insetta, NPML Children’s Librarian, said. “The children really enjoyed themselves.”

Sahana Narayan (grade 12), Julia Prasad (grade 11), and Durga Venkatesan (grade 10), ran the event, along with Dr. McGraw, Club Advisor. They read their own original poems to the children and helped them put together haikus, so they would get a feel for writing. Also featured was a poem by Sarojini Naidu, an Indian political activist in the Indian Independence Movement, so that the children would be exposed to diverse perspectives.

The children also created paper snowflakes to hang on the tree, along with their poems. The PoeTree still remains in the Codington Room at NPML, festively decorated with children’s poems and paper snowflakes and shining lights.

It was an exciting day for the Literary Magazine. We hope for more activities moving forward into the year!
