A few months ago the idea of fall high school sports seemed up in the air. However it’s now moving towards November and NPHS athletics have been right in the thick of things. Here’s a recap of last week’s Pioneer action.

Football

The football team defeated rivals Dayton Friday night to move to 4-0 on the season. New Providence overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Bulldogs 34-28 behind 216 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns from Junior Charlie Barth. The Pioneers host Brearly next week in a pivotal game with conference title implications.

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team split their two games this week. On Tuesday the team celebrated a senior night win with a 2-0 defeat over Roselle Catholic. Senior captain Dylan Paniagua had a goal and assist in the win. On Thursday the Pioneers fell to undefeated Oratory Prep 2-1 in overtime. The soccer team is back at it on Monday with a road trip to Roselle Catholic and begin their county tournament on Saturday.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team picked up a huge win on Thursday defeating Kent Place on the road. The Pioneers used three different scorers to pick up a huge 3-1 victory. The Pioneers then hosted Dayton on Saturday afternoon and used two Cate Munn throw-ins to pick up a 2-1 overtime win. The Pioneers host Elizabeth next Tuesday and are still in the running for a conference title.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team fell to Westfield on Monday but have now moved on to their state tournament. The Pioneers are the one seed in the NJSIAA Central East Group One bracket and will look to make a deep tournament run and repeat as sectional champs. NPHS will host the winner of the Sportswood Vs Roselle Park play in game.

Cross Country

The cross country team just completed a very successful conference championship race. The girls won the conference behind 3 top 5 finishes from Clare Kelly, Juliana LaPara, and Sophia Pasquariello. Kelly actually finished first in the whole conference.
