Pioneer Sports Recap 9/27-10/03
October 8, 2021
The calendar turned to October as numerous Pioneers have turned their attention towards conference titles and county tournaments. Once again, here’s a recap of last week’s action.
Football
The football team took on Brearley in a pivotal conference game on Friday night. The Pioneers bounced back from a slow start with two huge second quarter interceptions from Sophomore Matt Botvinis. NP bounced back from a first quarter deficit, en route to a dominating 42-14 win. The team now faces a short week, with a huge rivalry game at Dayton on Thursday night.
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team had another extremely successful week. The girls piled together three successful 2-0 victories to move to 8-0-1 and remain unbeaten through a month. After defeating Brearley twice, and Johnson, they now look at a week with road tests against Union Catholic and Governor Livingston.
Boys Soccer
The boys team suffered their first loss of the season, but put together two more wins to keep the successful season going. After defeating Johnson 3-2 on Tuesday, behind two goals from Ian Landsittel, the boys fell 1-0 to Cranford. Fortunately, Coach Barclay’s squad rebounded for a big 1-0 win over rivals Dayton on Saturday. The boys have their biggest game to this point when they host Governor Livingston on Thursday.
Volleyball
Volleyball had 2 big games last week and was able to get a successful split. They opened the week with a big 2-1 win over Cranford. Later, NP fell 2-0 to GL. The girls stay at home for a big game Monday against Oak Knoll, followed by road challenges against Scotch Plains and Johnson. The girls currently sit at 6-4 on the season.
Cross Country
Cross country used the off week to prepare for the New Balance Invitational Meet on Saturday. Miranda Bournique put together a great time finishing second in the girls 3200 meter race. Looking forward, runners like Hayden Singer and Milone Henry will look to continue hot streaks. The team as a whole expects competitive upcoming races as sectional championships are vastly approaching.
