Spring Sports on the Rise at NPHS
February 23, 2023
With winter sports coming to an end, all of New Providence’s spring sports teams are beginning to prepare for their seasons to come. Girls and boys lacrosse, baseball, softball, and track are all beginning to practice.
Girls lacrosse captain Grace Kelly said that the goals for this season are to win their conference, counties and states. They were able to accomplish some of this last season, but they are more determined then ever to make it all happen.
Kelly said: “”We plan to prepare for our goals by working really hard in practice and working on new plays that will help us defeat some of the teams that we have in games coming up.”
She added that every day they will work as hard as they can to stay in shape, work together and get closer as the season comes upon them.
One of the senior boys on the boys lacrosse team, Max Woodby, said something similar. Woodby said the boys on the team also want to win their conference this year. Another one of their big goals, one for every season, is to grow closer as a team.
They are preparing for their season with captains’ practices on the weekends and will be starting regular practices in the next few weeks.
Softball is preparing for their season by currently working out and doing team bonding already. With new team members joining, bonding will prove to be critical to their future success as a team together.
Abby Miller, the team’s captain said: “We have been preparing for this season by having winter workouts and growing closer as a team. There are a lot of freshmen who are coming on the team so it’s impornat that we are getting to know them now in the off season so we can all create a close knit environment.”
Their goals for this year’s season is to have a winning record and to also win their conference this year. Miller says that they want to grow closer as a team, have a lot of fun, but also put in the work when the time comes.
New Providence’s boys baseball team is swinging into the season too. They’re even doing a lot of preseason training. At The Zone every Sunday they have batting practice together as a team. This works for them as team bonding and also good practice for the rapidly approaching scrimmages and practices.
The boys’ captain, Nick Santacross, said their goals for their season consist of “winning the sectional championship for the fifth year in a row, keeping our record going and strong. And we want to grow close as a team to continue to have fun together.”
Last but not least, track has also been conditioning themselves for the spring season to come.
Hayden Singer, a senior on the team and the team’s captain said: “Our goal for the upcoming season is to each have personal improvements and records broken with better times. We want to keep improving together as a team. Once we get to championship season we are going to also try and win sectionals”.
They’ve been preparing for this season by running on their own. Some team members have been doing winter track as well to prepare and compete. Singer also said they are going to work well as a team at upcoming practices to prepare themselves, where he will be leading stretches and warm ups as captain. They plan to take their prep and workouts seriously, and get enough rest and recovery in order to perform well for each race to come.
