Getting to know Mr. Carangelo

Mia Fusillo, staff writer

Mr. Carangelo was a multi-season athlete as he played football, winter track and lacrosse in high school and club lacrosse in college. Participating in these sports led Mr. Carangelo to his closest friends, but also pointed him toward his future career. Athletics helped him realize he has a passion for teaching and in college Mr. Carangelo  studied to be an economics teacher.

Before being Athletic Director at NPHS, he was an AP Economics teacher here at NPHS and then the Assistant Principal as well. While both being the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director involve being an “educational leader,” he currently works with fewer disciplinary circumstances. Now, as Athletic Director, Mr. Carangelo tries to be both “visible and personable.”

Mr. Carangelo recommends that New Providence High School students play sports because they act as an “incredible avenue to teach you life lessons.” He believes that sports form an opportunity for any individual to compete against him/herself and form brotherly/sisterly bonds with teammates by enduring adversity. Not only that, but sports simulate life as they show that there may be difficult people or situations to work with, but it is all about working through those hardships.

He also believes that sports influence the entire person as exercise scientifically helps mental health and adds a certain structure to one’s life, creating tools of organization and productivity. While high school sports are time-consuming and competitive, Mr. Carangelo believes that NPHS coaches do a good job of “avoiding burn out” and “looking at roster numbers.” For example, on the day after a tough game, the boys soccer team may go inside and the players may watch their most recent game instead of heading back out onto the field. This enables them to assess how they did, but it also helps to have a mental practice and rest up.

Overall, athletics showed Mr. Carangelo that his heart encompasses both sports and teaching. He truly believes that “the main thing in life is to find something you are passionate about and love doing.”
