College and Grading: The Difference between High School

Max Zamora, staff writer

College and high school are very different in how they teach their students. The schedule and classes in college are very different from the system that students have used for 12 years. It can be very odd for a freshman to learn the ins and outs of the new grading system and a new online platform, like PowerSchool but different.

High school grades are based on multiple factors including homework, classwork, projects and tests.  There might be a lot of these grades over the course of a Marking Period.

According to the King’s College website:  “High School: Good grades are based on the ability to comprehend what you were taught in the form in which it was presented to you, or to solve the types of problems you were taught how to solve.”

College grades are frequently based on fewer factors such as bigger papers, tests and projects. The college standards might also be set higher. The lowest passing grade is sometimes a C instead of a D.

Varsity Tutors, a set of websites that helps upcoming college students learn the ropes, states that “Not all work counts toward your final grade.”

Most of the homework and other assignments are meant to be used as study guides, as they prepare for the major exams and papers.
