A Few Questions for Mr. Tracey

Victor Bannworth, contributor

New Providence has a diverse and unique staff, each with their own personalities that they share with all of their students in class. The only problem with this is; many students don’t get to have or experience each teacher’s style or even know a little about why they got into teaching. That is why I’ve decided to interview teachers and ask a couple of questions about them and how they came to be teachers. This week, I decided to interview Mr. Tracey, one of the longest tenured teachers in the high school.  He’s worked here twice as long as most of us have been alive, so we can all benefit from his words of wisdom.

How long have you been working at this school?

31 years

What type of work have you done with the school?

Every type of history, but currently criminology and sociology.

What were some of your favorite teaching moments/years?

Hearing kids that have graduated and the impact I’ve had on them.

What made you decide to do teaching in the first place?

I loved history, and oceanography didn’t work out. I got experience when teaching my own high school class for a day and got positive feedback from classmates.

What is one thing you hope your students take away from learning?

To love to learn, and to know there is always something you might not know. Be a better citizen.

If you could come back as any animal what would it be?

Cat, allergic to cats, but love them.

Who is your favorite author, and why?

Oscar Wilde.  Satire, smart writer, witty.

What is your tagline?

[He didn’t give me one so I will tell you his tag line  is “learn, live, and keep going.”]

What is your favorite sport to watch or play?

Hockey to watch. Tennis to play.

Favorite movie star?

Humphrey Bogart.

When were you most frightened in your life?

[There is no way I will believe Mr. Tracey was ever frightened of anything.]

What do you wish they could fix or install at New Providence?

[Smart man, no comment.]

What’s your favorite country?

England.  There’s an English and Welsh influence in my family.

Finish this sentence:  My favorite teacher was… because…

Doctor Maxwell.  Very dedicated to learning, serious, demanding.  Enjoyed him very much. Enjoyed his writing.
