Months in the Making: We Review the Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Months in the Making: We Review the Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich

The Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich made its debut on August 12th of 2019. Although the sandwich was good and received ok reviews, it was not immediately the phenomenon it would become. Soon, however, long lines both inside and outside of Popeyes locations around the US caused hour-long waits for people to try the new iconic chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich would become so popular that people were fighting at Popeyes locations just to get their hands on one. After being wiped out of their two month inventory in just two weeks, Popeyes took the item off of their menus until they could get more in stock. On Sunday November 3rd Popeyes brought back the chicken sandwich. Some say this date was a clear shot at rival Chick-Fil-A who is closed on Sundays. After months of hearing about the hype of the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich I decided to finally try one.

Popeyes Chicken Sandwich has a regular version and a spicy version. I ordered the spicy one to see if it was spicy at all. After taking some time to observe the sandwich I noticed that the sandwich consists of a piece of buttermilk fried chicken, mayonnaise, pickles, and a brioche bun. The fried chicken piece is fairly large and takes up almost all the space on the buns. The buns have a spicy mayo sauce on them but not a whole lot of it and pickles to go with it. After trying a bite I noticed that the flavor of the chicken wasn’t very strong and that the flavor of the spicy mayo and pickles stand out. The fried chicken was cooked well and was a good piece of crisp chicken, despite it lacking flavors. The warm brioche bun gives the sandwich an extra flavor and isn’t dry at all. After finishing more than half of the sandwich the chicken started to fall off the bun as it was almost too big to be on the bun. After time the sandwich became dry and it was clear the sandwich needed more sauce. After finishing the sandwich I had a pretty clear conclusion on the sandwich.

This was my first time ever having a chicken sandwich from any fast food place so I do not know the quality of other chains’ versions of the chicken sandwich.  Overall, the sandwich was good but not great. The sandwich is something I might get again if I was at a Popeyes but not something that I would wait in hour lines for or get into a fight with someone over. The sandwich lacked extra flavor outside of the tiny bit of spicy mayo and pickles. The piece of chicken was cooked well and had a crisp flavor but needed something a little bit more. The chicken was also too big to be on the bun as it continuously slid off. The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich did not deserve the hype it received.
