Freshman Boys Basketball Game Recap: New Providence Pioneers vs. Irvington

The Irvington Blue Knights beat the New Providence Pioneers boys freshman basketball team 54-41 on Thursday January 9th in the fourth game of the season, leaving them with two wins and two losses.

The game kicked off with Will McCarron sinking a foul shot to earn the Pioneers the first point of the game. New Providence, coached by Mr. Sommo, kept a promising 4 point lead for the majority of the first quarter until Irvington come back in the last 3 minutes of the quarter to score three layups and two foul shots to earn themselves an 8-7 one point lead for the first quarter. 

Will McCarron was the highest scoring player with over 20 points in the game.

Irvington started the second quarter with six consecutive layups earning themselves a 13 point lead in only the first few minutes. Nick Santacross brought the Pioneers back into the game with another layup. Irvington then responded with 3 more layups shortly after, scoring themselves 6 more points, ending off the quarter 25-10.  Irvington maintained a high 15 point lead.

Will McCarron began the 3rd quarter sinking a foul shot in only the first few seconds securing the Pioneers a measly one more point. Irvington came back shortly to make a layup when McCarron quickly responded with a whopping three layups in a row. Things began looking hopeful for the Pioneers as Luke Ondreko followed that up with the first three point shot of the game to reduce Irvington’s lead to only seven points. Irvington and New Providence went back and forth the rest the quarter to end it off 36-26.

The last quarter went similarly as both the Pioneers and Blue Knights go back and forth. Ultimately, NP ended the game trailing by 13 points. This loss put the Pioneers at a 2-2 record for the season so far.
