This year’s spring musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It, is a comedy that premiered on Broadway in 2012. The show features music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by Joe DiPietro. The story takes place in the 1920s and follows the misadventures of a wealthy playboy named Jimmy Winter as he tries to find true love and avoid getting married for the wrong reasons.

The New Providence High School Drama Department, including the cast, crew, pit, managers, and directors have worked tirelessly since the beginning of auditions in December and rehearsals in January to perfect the production.

The leads of this musical are junior Ronan Flanagan who plays the role of Jimmy Winter and Alex Skotarczak, senior, who plays the role of Billie Bendix.

Flanagan says that he’s looking forward to bringing the musical to life after months of preparation: “Long Island in the Roaring 20’s was very vibrant and alive and I’m excited to immerse myself and the audience in that world in the coming weeks of performance.”

There are so many different aspects that go into putting together a big production like this one and everyone has to work as a team. Brianna Wyco, stage manager, and Skotarczak say that some days they will spend up to six extra hours a day at school during play season.

Dance captain Cali Pucci explains: “Everyone plays a significant role to help the pieces of the puzzle come together.”

In the words of cast member, Mayuri Rajakaruna, being part of the musical takes “lots of hard work and lots of showing up after school.”

As Flanagan also points out, “There’s a lot of work done behind the scenes that also goes into the production including the lighting and sound crew, the backstage crew, and our directors as well. It’s a long process but it’s always worth it in the end!”

Members of the play believe that the most rewarding parts of being in the production are the feelings after a big number and the friendships made along the way. Skotarczak says that she is really looking forward to performing alongside some of her best friends and seeing the audience’s reaction to the performance.
