Winter Track Preview

Mr. Meyer has been a coach at the New Providence High School since 2012. He got into running by joining his high school track team: “I ran in high school a little but not well. When I started coaching here, it was after competing a lot in my 20s and I really loved it then and then I became a coach.”
This year, Meyer’s goal for his runners is to win the sectional meet. To prepare the team to meet this goal, he prepares his runners by looking at each kid and seeing what they are good at. For winter track there’s long distance, sprinting, shot put, and throwing.
Most of the people who did cross country in the fall are now doing winter track, which is pretty similar to cross country except the weather is nicer and athletes stay at the track instead of running around town.
Catalina Solis Garcia did cross country and now is continuing with winter track.
“My sister ran throughout high school so she inspired me to run,” she said.
Meyer also believes that runners benefit from personal connections. When choosing captains, he said: “We look for people who have the most history on the team and who will willingly take on a leadership position without asking them to do so.”
