When asked to think of a well-rounded teacher at NPMS, it’s hard to ignore someone who brings equal passion to his teaching and coaching roles. That teacher is Mr. Manns, an incredibly skilled educator and coach who consistently demonstrates his dedication to his profession. He has been teaching for eight years and is an assistant coach for football, basketball, and lacrosse. With so much to manage during his day, he has perfected his routine to remain productive and efficient.
Manns starts his day early at 5:20 AM since he is busy. He begins by brushing his teeth and hair and getting dressed for work. After that, he goes downstairs to eat breakfast. He tries to relax for five to ten minutes before getting into his car and driving to work.
He arrives at school around 7:15 AM. Once there, he goes to his office and starts preparing for the day. Manns teaches six classes that rotate each day.
He explains, “Some days I teach health; other days I teach physical education. Right now, we’re playing volleyball in physical education, so we’ve been working on skills for the kids. In health class, we’re discussing the health triangle.”
To stay organized and productive, he recommends using phone notes, setting alarms, and relying on a calendar to avoid oversights.
After his classes, he takes a lunch break.
“Usually, I like to eat lunch with my coworkers and Mr. Murphy. My lunch is prepared in the morning by my fiancée or by me—usually a sandwich of some sort.”
Following lunch, he has a prep period where he can review everything he did in the morning and prepare for his other classes.
At the end of the day, he coaches football, which means different activities every day: “I usually have football practice right after school, which lasts until about 5:30 or 6:00 PM.”
After football practice, he drives home between 6:00 and 7:00 PM. Once home, he eats dinner, showers, watches TV, or relaxes for an hour or two.
Overall, Mr. Manns is an incredibly well-rounded teacher who shows his passion and dedication for teaching every day, putting his heart into everything he teaches and encouraging his students and athletes to do their best.
