Preview of Girls Lacrosse

Cara Lawton, staff writer

After a loss in the State Quarterfinals last year, the Pioneers girls lacrosse team is looking for a more successful season in 2022. The Pioneers finished 10-9 last season after moving up a conference a year prior. They are staying in that same conference this year, making their schedule more difficult than previous years.

The Pioneers lost five starters from last season and have brought up 10 new players to the team this year.

There has also been an addition to the coaching staff with the new assistant coach Claire Eberle. Eberle is a 2015 alumna of the New Providence girls lacrosse team who  went on to continue her lacrosse career at Scranton, and even got the chance to coach the collegiate and club lacrosse level. Her knowledge of the game is going to be an asset for the Pioneers this season.

Along with Coach Eberle, Coach Henry, and Coach Fama will also be returning to the coaching staff this year. Henry has been coaching for 12 years, while Fama has been coaching for 11 years. Both of them bring a high level of experience to the team.

Meet some of the team:

What are you looking forward to most this season?

Caitlin Foti: I am looking forward to all of our pasta parties, team bonding, and having a successful season.

Sarah Dwyer: Playing games in the warm weather.

Rowen Henry: This season I’m excited just to be able to play with our team, everyone makes it so much fun and it’s a great team to be with everyday.

How is this season already different from last season?

Caitlin Foti: Starting in March this year we have more scrimmages and time to spend preparing for our games.

Sarah Dwyer: This season there is a lot more freedom to play because there is not any COVID restrictions.

Rowen Henry: So far it’s been similar. I feel like I’m not deep into the season, so we will see as it progresses.

What are your goals this season?

Caitlin Foti: My goals are to hopefully win more conference games than last year, and have a fun final season.

Sarah Dwyer: My goals are to help the team to a sectional and conference title.

Rowen Henry: A goal I have this season is to improve my senses when the other team has free positions, because that’s how a majority of goals are scored. If I can improve there I feel it will really help the team.
