Catching Up On College Hoops

The leaves are falling and the temperatures are dropping. That must mean a new season of college basketball is upon us. The 2019-2020 college basketball season is less than one month old but the amount of drama seen so far is off the charts.

The season started off with the four best teams in the country playing in a neutral site classic.

Fourth ranked Duke took down the third ranked Kansas Jayhawks in an up and down game with some late magic from Tre Jones that sent Duke to 1-0. After a quick intermission, there was a bit of an upset when the top dog was defeated. Kentucky took it to Michigan State and beat the Spartans by seven. This caused a reshuffle in the rankings just one week into the season. Kentucky was the new number one team in the country. They also had a slate of easy wins to follow, well so they thought.

The Wildcats hosted Evansville, a college that no one would call a basketball school by any means. In one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport, 25 point underdog Evansville shocked Kentucky and defeated the Wildcats by three points.

Later that week the Spartans faced a huge road test of their own. Michigan State, who fell to third in the rankings, made a good case to get back to that number one spot with a gritty win against Seton Hall. Myles Powell did all he could to keep the 12th ranked Pirates in the game, but some clutch Spartan shooting towards the end kept MSU on top.

The season is still young but three of the top four teams in the nation already hold a loss and have tough games to follow as well. In a few weeks, Michigan State and Duke will face off in what should be another top four matchup. In about a month, Kentucky will have a two game stretch against 16th ranked Ohio State, who just destroyed 10th ranked Villanova, and a huge rivalry game against 4th ranked Louisville. Kansas later has a road trip to previously mentioned Villanova. The bad news for Kansas is that Villanova should have things figured out by the time KU comes into town.

In a sport where the unexpected has become the expected, that truth is holding up a little bit more so far. This college basketball season is off to a great start.  Buckle up folks!
