At the 2021 Presidential Inauguration, all the powerful women involved in the Inauguration made the best fashion statement by dressing in a symbolic and monochromatic color theme.

Kamala Harris was introduced as Vice President at the 2021 Inauguration on Wednesday, January 20. Featured in the photo is Vice President Harris in her purple coat and dress by fashion designers Christopher John Rogers and Sergio Hudson. Harris’s purple monochromatic outfit is fitting given that the color purple often signifies power, ambition, and wisdom.  Harris is the first Black and Asian American woman to hold office as Vice President. Purple is also one of Harris’s campaign colors that many believe is a tribute to Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress.

First Lady Jill Biden is featured with her husband and President Joseph Biden. Jill Biden is wearing an ocean blue wool tweed coat and dress by Alexandra O’Neill. The ocean blue color often signifies trust, confidence, and stability. The First Lady’s gloves, shoes, and mask were the same shade of blue as her dress and coat.

Additionally, Natalie Biden, granddaughter of President Joe Biden took part in the monochromatic theme wearing a custom pink  Lafayette 148 New York Dawson’s coat with a matching mask and gloves. Natalie’s pink outfit was a fan favorite and many people referred to her as a ‘new style icon’ on Twitter for pulling off this simple yet fashionable look.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama wore a plum-colored turtleneck paired with matching flared pants and accessorized with a gold oversized belt and coat in the same plum color. Obama’s outfit, like Harris’s, was designed by Sergio Hudson. Obama has worn Hudson before and has supported his brand for many years now. Her outfit embodies power dressing in wearing pants with elegance.

Lady Gaga performed the national anthem at the Inauguration Ceremony. She was dressed in a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown for the Inauguration, paired with a large golden dove brooch and gloves. On her Instagram, Gaga explained the significance of the dove brooch saying it was “A dove carrying an olive branch” explaining that with the new President, “May we all make peace with each other.”

Jennifer Lopez (J. Lo) performed at the Inauguration singing “This Land is Your Land,” “America the Beautiful,” and her very well-known song, “Let’s Get Loud.” Lopez was dressed head to toe in her Chanel all white outfit, consisting of a tweed coat and wide leg pants and a chain belt and earrings to accessorize.  In the early 1900s, white was often worn as a symbol of resistance against gender inequality. J. Lo’s all white outfit was a testament to this movement.

Amanda Gorman was chosen to read her original poem, “The Hill We Climb” at the 2021 Inauguration of President Biden. In this photo, she is dressed from head to toe in Prada. Gorman wore a white poplin shirt under a sunshine yellow coat with a black leather pencil skirt. She topped off the outfit with a red satin headband and black pumps. In an interview with Vogue, Gorman said, “I am weaving my own type of symbolism into my outfit… I’m also wearing a yellow coat, which is my own nod to Dr. Jill Biden, who was the one who recommended me in the first place, and I’m so honored by that.”  Gorman’s poem was incredibly written and powerful like her outfit and that of all the other women at the Inauguration, setting the prime example of making a powerful fashion statement.
