Meet the Team: Wrestling

Wrestling is a complicated sport that requires perseverance, consistency, and resilience.

Liam Smith, one of NPHS’s senior captains, explained his outlook on this year’s team: “The goal for the team this year is for us to qualify for the state playoffs. We haven’t qualified since my freshman season and now that we have a much more filled out roster I think it’s a goal that is well within reach.”

Smith has a lot of faith in his teammates: “If I had to pick one word to describe our program I would use the word resilience. From changes in coaches to losing many key wrestlers to COVID and injuries, this program exemplifies toughness.”

Daniel Seib, another captain, agreed that the team represents more than wins and losses: “Everyone who joins the program is expected to put 100% of their time and effort into being a better wrestler and to use every practice, every win, and every loss as tools to improve themselves. The wrestling program is something that is not only meant to improve your wrestling skill but also to improve your life and your body, to me wrestling is what drives me everyday to become better and to become stronger.”

Smith is encouraged by the addition of so many new wrestlers this year: “Due to the fact that the program has been rebuilding for a few years now, I’m thrilled to have so many kids wanting to try out. With such a small team, we have lacked energy in practice and at matches but with the increase in numbers this year I expect the youth of our team to bring excitement for the future. Many people are intimidated to try out for wrestling so I respect the underclassmen who are eager to compete and I hope they have fun with it.
