Winter Track Preview

With a successful fall season from all fall sports, it’s finally time for the winter sports to show their stuff.  One sport working hard so far has been the Pioneer Winter Track under the coaching staff of Coach Arnold, Coach Murphy, Coach Prufer, and Coach Meyer.  The girls’ team will be led by seniors Elaine House, Myah Campbell-Reaves, Camille Ake, Becky Wirth, and Laura Maxwell. For the boys, seniors Alex Shema, Mark Hays, and Andrew Scharf will guide the team. Star athletes this year include House, Campbell-Reaves, Hays, and sophomores Megan Friscia, Jordan Price, and David Adams.

Winter Track is an interesting sport. Unlike Spring Track where runners race on a 400m loop, the indoor teams run around a 200m track inside a large arena. The typical races still exist: 4x400m, 4x200m, 4x800m, shot put, and pole vault, but some indoor-exclusive races exist as well, such as the 300m, 55m, 55m shuttle hurdles, and the 600m.

With a large number of freshmen and sophomores this year, the Pioneers aim to be conditioned not only for the competitive part of the season, but to also for the crucial spring season that waits ahead.

Both teams have their first meet on December 21st at DrewUniversity. It is an invitational, thus the teams they will be competing against will be very skilled. However, as their schedule progresses, the teams will be more leveled with New Providence’s and hopefully some championship titles can be won.
